Preparation of a program for non-revenue water reduction in 3 priority townships

The project aims establishing a comprehensive action plan for reducing the non-revenue water factor in Yangon City.
It is based on surveys and measurements done in 3 townships located downtown supposed to be the more affected by non-revenue water.
It includes commercial and technical aspects of the non-revenue water reduction strategy for a pilot zone representing:

  • 394 km of network
  • 50,719 domestic customers
  • 676,019 persons
  • Project execution dates
from May 2014 to May 2015
  • Localization
    Yangon / Myanmar
  • Expertise domains
    • Commercial optimization
    • Operational assistance
    • Technical optimization
Description of the WMI service
  • Construction of one rudimentary domestic meters test bench (DN 15 & DN 20 mm)
  • Domestic meters accuracy assessment (different positions) for 12 meters DN 20 mm
  • Consumptions profiles (9 domestic and 19 non-domestic)
  • Pressure monitoring program in 3 townships (46 pressure measurements on hydrants)
  • Construction of 6 measurement chambers
  • Flow/pressure measurements during 10 days in one township (10 simultaneous measurement points)
  • 3 ultrasonic flowmeters
  • 7 in-pipe insertion electromagnetic flowmeters
  • Flow measurements during at least 4 days on 7 tube wells (ultrasonic flowmeter)
  • Hydraulic modeling of the 3 townships (394 km network length)
  • Pressure measurements during at least 4 days on 13 pumping stations (modelling)
  • Detecting and locating physical leakages using helium gas tracking method
Key Results
  • Non-revenue water reduction action plan established
  • Preliminary water balance established with non-revenue water at 75% (including more than 85% of commercial losses)
  • GIS and preliminary hydraulic model created for the project area
  • Rudimentary domestic test bench installed
  • YCDC staff trained for network optimization
