Reduction of technical losses of the water distribution system

EMCALI contracted WMI in order to reduce the physical losses of the potable water distribution network.

Cali city is the third city of the country in term of population and is one of the main economic and financial hub of Columbia. The water distribution network includes 3000 km of canalizations ND50 to ND1500mm and 600 000 connections.

Description of the WMI service

Network zoning – 35 sectors:

  • Investigation (7,000 controlled valves, 800 hours of georadar, drawings verification CAD/SIG etc.), zero pressure test (ZPT), hydraulic measures (3,000 days), modelling and calibration of the model (1,500 Km), analysis of the alternative sectors,
  • Construction of 30 pressure regulation plant with macro meters, active pressure monitoring and SCADA connection,
  • Installation of 2,000 m of pipes mainly with trenchless methods (pipe bursting and horizontal drilling),
  • Replacement of 1,000 valves (ND80 to ND250) on all the network.

Leak detection, reduction and repairs:

  • Non visible leak detection with acoustic methods (4,000 km) and reparation of 5,000 leaks planned in the contract,
  • Installation of pressure reduction equipment on the network,
  • Rehabilitation of obsolete pipelines,
  • Reinforcement of the interconnections to improve the network zoning.
  • Emergency repairs on the large diameter pipes and special work (DN300 – DN 1500).

Services:

  • Analysis as the per the IWA protocol – base line and water gain of the studied sector,
  • Installation of telemetry and of an automate (SCADA) to collect the data in real time of more than 300 strategic points of the network. (9,000 data /month),
  • Training of sectors and network operation and maintenance teams,
  • Operational support for the startup of the created hydraulic sectors,
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance of the pressure regulation plants.
Key Results
  • Objective:
    Save up to 60,000 m3/day
(15 million m3) of water cumulated over the duration of the project (2 years)
    (in progress)
